I lost 5lbs!

I finished my 5 week fitness bootcamp class and lost a total of 5 pounds in 5 weeks.  I have only gained weight for the past 4 years so I had set my sights low and really was only hoping to stop the gain.  I was thrilled to actually lose a little weight.

If you are reading this blog, you are probably like me and tried diets with no results.  My husband insists that if I just cut calories I should be able to lose weight.  This has never worked for me.  There are days that I barely eat...but I do drink a lot of coffee.  I know that caffeine is bad for hypothyroid folks but I just couldn't make it through the day any other way.

The good news is that I didn't really change my diet during this program, I just changed my mind set.  The program was from 5am-6am.  I went to class, came home and ate a banana or a protein bar, then laid on the couch because I was so exhausted.  I would get up at 6:45 and get my kids off to school and myself to work.  The soreness and sheer exhaustion throughout the day reminded me how hard I had worked to lose weight so I was careful not to undo that hard work during the day.  I also drank a ton of water during and after the class so that helped me stay full and flushed out toxins early in the day.

I honestly didn't feel better or have any more energy, but I did lose weight, so that made me pretty happy.

The bootcamp program that I participated in was similar to the Insanity or P90X programs.  Our trainer admitted to taking moves directly from those videos.  This bootcamp is pretty pricy so I am now going to attempt to repeat this program on my own at home.

I will keep you posted!

Everything is bigger in Texas....even me.

Last summer my husband's job was relocated and we moved from Iowas to Texas.  The process was overhwhelming to say the least.  I sort of just ran on adrenalin trying to keep it all together.  I started having fainting spells 2 months before we moved.  I would get tingly and then just black out.  I never got hurt but it was alarming.  I had one of these spells while in the check out lane at Target and drove straight to the Urgent Care to get checked out.  I had a consistent pain/ pressure under my left rib so they ran an x-ray of my abdomen.   Diagnosis: My colon was slow and at that point it was 100% full.  so essentially I was told that I was full of sh**.

The tingling continued after we moved and a new doctor in Texas believed that it was due to anxiety.  She ran several tests and through an ultrasound I learned that I had a small nodule on my thyroid.  In the 9 years since my Hashimotos thyroidistis diagnosis, I had never been offered an ultrasound so this was interesting but no one knows how long I have had the nodule or if it was impacting my health.  My new doctor continues to run ultrasounds to watch for growth and luckily ther haven't been any changes.

A few months after moving I began to gain weight at a rapid pace.  Some weeks I was gaining 1lb per week.  I didn't excercise a lot but I could run 4 miles on a weekend so I was in decent shape.  I was already depressed from the move so this weight gain was a huge blow.  After months of visting my doctor and being told I should 'watch my portions', the solution fell in my lap....well, ok...my email box.  I received a Groupon for Texas Fit Chicks Bootcamp.  this is a 5 week program that was started by a woman who was hypothyroid.  If that wasn't a sign, I don't know what it.

I am in week 4 of my program and am beginning to see some definition in my arms again.  My face is a bit less puffy.  So far, my scale reports that I have lost 5 lbs.  This is HUGE for me as I haven't seen the scale go down for nearly 5 years.  I am relieved that my weight has stopped going up.

I have my official weigh-in and measurement next week so I will keep you posted.

Gaining by the Day

I failed to mention in my first post that I am now 36 years old and weigh 156 lbs (and am 5'5").  I know that this doesn't sound alarming to most people but trust me when I say that I looked pudgy when I was 30 lbs. lighter.  No thanks to all of the swelling--courtesy of Hashimoto's.

I have been tracking my weight for several years.  I keep a daily log in a notebook next to my scale and always weigh at the same time.  Recently, I found a notebook that was dated 1 month postpartum.  Sadly, I now weigh more than I did 4 years ago when I had my last child.

I am considering renaming my blog - 'my weight-gain journey' since that is the direction I am now headed in.

Instead of dwelling about the number on my scale, I have decided that I need to take additional action and sign up for a 10K race.  Before I had kids, I ran 2 half marathons but now only have endurance for 3 miles.  Perhaps this self challenge will push me in the right direction.

Miscarriages led to my original hypothyroid diagnosis

From Misdiagnosed to Miscarriages
I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism at age 28 after 4 miscarriages.  It was such a relief to have an answer to these symptoms that had plagued me as long as I could remember.  Throughout high school, I was tested for mono and iron deficiencies due to unusual lethargy.  My family and friends would call it my coma sleep.  No amount of sleep would make me feel rested.  I would actually feel sick when I woke up and one doctor told me that was from too much sleep.  I was also falsely diagnosed with sleep apnea and told that I was carrying too much fat around my abdomen by another doctor.  At that time, I was 23 and weighed 123 lbs.  Even I knew that was a stretch of a diagnosis.  What I wouldn't give to be 123 lbs today!

A Simple Blood Test Changed My Life
I was skeptical that any of my prior diagnoses were accurate, but didn't have much choice than to believe that I was an overweight 23 year old with sleep apnea. Now here I was at 28 and never correlated the miscarriages with my exhaustion, puffiness, paleness or thinning hair.  I just thought I was a victim of poor genes.  I now know that I am luckier than most women dealing with infertility.  This was a relatively short amount of agony and I was diagnosed fairly quickly.  The good news was I knew I could get pregnant, I just couldn't stay pregnant.  My OB ran some simple  blood tests and found that my TSH was 5.9.  She put me on a low dose of Synthroid and some Progesterone suppositories and voila, I was pregnant.  Of course, I was scared to death because I had been pregnant several times before but lost each pregnancy before I was 20 weeks along.  My OB thought that this was a sufficient course of action, however, I did not want to lose another pregnancy so I went to work learning everything I could about hypothyroidism and pregnancy.
